Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens - better than the general public by the name of Queen Latifah is an American performer, actress and acrobat. In music, film and television, Queen Latifah has received two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award and six additional Grammy nominations, and nods to the Emmy Award. Queen Latifah is the daughter of Newark New Jersey native. Her parents were Lancelot Sr. who was a policeman, and Rita instructor of Irvington High School. The couple divorced in the year Latifah was ten. Latifah grew up within the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. Latifah can be described as an Arabic word that means "delicate and gentle". Her aunt gave it to her when she was eight. Latifah was always tall, standing 5'10" She was a center forward on her high school basketball team. The number she sang was Home from the musical The Wiz in a high school performance. Latifah was a member of Ladies Fresh, a rap collective that started her career in beatboxing. Latifah used to be a part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who united around the producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to the host of Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song, and then signed Latifah in 1988, to drop her first single Wrath of My Madness.
